What Documents Do You Need to Sell Jewelry in New York?

What Documents Do You Need to Sell Jewelry in New York?

Selling jewelry in New York City is straightforward, but there are some documentation requirements you should know about.

Required: Photo ID

New York City law requires a valid government-issued photo ID when selling jewelry to a licensed buyer. Acceptable forms include: driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID. The buyer records the ID information as part of the transaction record.

Recommended: Purchase Receipts

While not required, original purchase receipts can help establish provenance. For luxury watches and designer jewelry, a receipt can sometimes add value by confirming authenticity and purchase date.

Recommended: Certificates

For diamonds, a grading certificate from GIA, AGS, or another recognized laboratory provides independent verification of the diamond's quality. Having a certificate can increase confidence in the evaluation and sometimes the offer.

Recommended: Warranty Papers

For luxury watches (Rolex, Cartier, etc.), the original warranty card or papers add value. They provide provenance and help verify authenticity.

Recommended: Appraisals

If you have an existing appraisal, bring it. While appraisal values (often for insurance) are typically higher than resale values, the appraisal provides useful reference information about your items.

Recommended: Original Boxes

Original packaging — especially for luxury watches and designer jewelry — can add value. Bring the original boxes, pouches, and any accessories.

What If You Don't Have Documentation?

If you don't have receipts, certificates, or boxes, you can still sell your jewelry. The buyer will evaluate based on the items themselves. Documentation is helpful but not required.
